The need to convey our emotions, which we can easily express with our gestures and facial expressions in our verbal communication, left us with an important question as we transitioned to the digital environment. "How will we express our emotions in written communication?" Of course, humankind, which can quickly adapt to digital environments and every new development, started to create facial expressions with punctuation marks as a solution to this situation. 🙂 We started to be able to express our emotions with these symbols called emoticons. Later, character images, or Emojis, formed by combining "e", which means picture in Japanese, and "moji", which means character, entered our lives. From the days when we tried to create emojis with punctuation marks, to today when we use emojis instead of punctuation marks; emojis have become an important tool for conveying emotional states. In the wide range of emojis, which includes hundreds of various symbols such as facial expressions, people, animals, nature, food, drink, activities, travel, and flags, we can express ourselves almost without even forming sentences by finding the expression we want. Emojis have become such a big part of our lives that the education giant Oxford, as a result of research, stated that the "face with tears of joy emoji" is the most globally used emoji, and this emoji was chosen as the "Word of the Year" by the Oxford dictionary in 2015. Oxford Dictionaries President Casper Grathwohl stated that the communication demands of the 21st century could not be met by traditional words, and that emojis filled these gaps. The official recognition of emojis by such a deep-rooted and traditional institution explains to us how strong and important communication in the digital world is. Emojis, which strengthen the written communication we carry out with digital media tools and which we use to express our simple emotions in our daily communication, save us time and contribute greatly when we are closed to verbal communication, but on the other hand, emojis fall behind verbal communication in reflecting complex emotions. At the point where emojis get stuck, we can express ourselves more comfortably by continuing communication verbally. While we're on the subject of conveying emotions, it's worth sharing the effects of emojis on conveying emotions with a scientific claim. Nature journal examined 74 emojis in Apple's operating system in detail and investigated the effects of emojis on people's emotional states. In this study, the positions and effects of emojis on the axis of value and excitement were evaluated. It has been determined that emojis are very important for conveying emotions, but it has also been foreseen that the effects of emojis on conveying emotions may change. The subject of emojis is an endless world. There is so much to research and analyze in this regard. In these days when we can adapt to every innovation brought by technology, emoji is rapidly approaching to become the new global language of the digital environment.
